da premier bet: According to Sport, Newcastle United are nearing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona centre-back Marlon Santos, with the move due to take place on Thursday afternoon.
What’s the story?
da leao: Newcastle fans have had to endure another largely frustrating transfer window, but the club has made some headway over the last couple of weeks.
It would be fair to say though that the club’s supporters are not overly happy owner Mike Ashley is not splashing out on deals this summer, rather attempting to secure loan signings.
Indeed, Salomon Rondon recently arrived on loan from West Bromwich Albion despite the Magpies being strongly linked with a permanent deal for the centre-forward.
According to Sport, another loan is on the verge of taking place, with head coach Rafael Benitez keen to solve his centre-back woes by bringing Barcelona’s Marlon to the club.
The Magpies are facing being without central defender Florian Lejeune for a chunk of the season following a knee operation, and reinforcements are certainly needed in that position.
Would Marlon be a good signing?
A two-time Brazil Under-23 international, Marlon moved to Barcelona from Fluminense on loan in the summer of 2016, and was a regular for Barcelona B during the 2016-17 season.
The deal was made permanent in last summer’s transfer window, but the defender was ultimately sent on loan to Nice for the 2017-18 campaign.
Whilst in France, Marlon made 23 Ligue 1 appearances, and also featured on three occasions in the Europa League during an impressive year.

The centre-back was also due to spend next season on loan at Nice, but Barcelona recalled him this summer with the view to a permanent sale, although another loan now looks likely to occur as Newcastle close on a deal.Standing at 6ft and boasting an impressive turn of speed, Marlon has the tools to be a success in the Premier League next season, and Newcastle will hope that he can hit the ground running.
