da brdice: This week’s events have proven that Arsenal are not a team ready to be crowned champions. They have not reached that level of desire and determination as shown in recent years. The loss to our fierce rivals on Wednesday the 14th of April is evidence of this.
Defeat to their London rivals was a massive blow for Wenger’s men. I watched the game and had hoped to see Arsenal fired up for the London derby…did we see it?…no. Only in the last 7 minutes Arsenal decided to play football, by then it was too late. One positive to take from the game was Sol Campbell’s performance. Sol was absolutely immense on the night, and by far the man of the match. As hard as it is to admit, Tottenham did deserve the win, they wanted it more, they fought for absolutely everything and got what they deserved. Arsenal should have shown the same level of commitment, if they had done, they probably would have got something from the game. Arsenal did seem out of the title race that night, team morale was very low and they had slipped 6 points behind leaders Chelsea.
Chelsea lost to Spurs this past Saturday, and Manchester United grabbed a dramatic late winner against arch-enemies Manchester City in the Sunday afternoon kick-off. The results favoured the gunners, Its left them 6 points behind the leader with a game in hand.
Arsenal travelled up north this past Sunday to the DW stadium to face Wigan. It was a game that the gunners had to win to keep their title dreams alive.
Arsenal were cruising early on, as they went 0-2 up, with goals from Theo Walcott and Mikael Silvestre. As time went by, Arsenal were being pressed, but never really looked like conceding, although with Lukasz Fabianski in goal anything is possible.
The last 10 minutes of the game produced utter mayhem as Arsenal let slip a 2 goal lead and eventually lose to Wigan 3-2! It was one of the best fight backs in a long time, and will be remembered for years to come. An ‘easy’ win turned out to be a shocking defeat for the gunners. Arsenal are now officially out of the title race, mathematically its still possible but miracles don‘t happen every week.
So it seems it will be another trophy less season for the red side of north London.
Many critics have hit out at Arsenal’s goalkeepers, claiming they are not good enough. I totally agree with these statements, In fact, I think Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski would be more useful entertaining children as clowns at Zippo’s circus! Since David Seaman departure from the goal post position, Arsenal have not been able to replace him. Jens Lehmann did for a period but still wasn‘t the complete package in fans eyes.
Arsene Wenger desperately needs to buy a goalkeeper after witnessing the mistakes both have done this past week. The Defence is fine, but lacks youth. A young, strong, hard defender needs to be bought in to partner Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen.
Arsenal’s midfield is the area that Arsene Wenger needs to focus on most.
Denilson and Abou Diaby are not up to standard. Denilson’s movement is very slow and his positioning on the pitch is awful to say the least. Abou Diaby is an on-off player, he can play well one game and have five bad ones…not consistent enough. Theo Walcott has potential to become a good player but his decision making is very poor which is very frustrating to watch at times. Arsenal do have quality midfielders, skipper Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin, Thomas Rosicky, Alex Song fit this bill, but when these five players do not play together the team suffer. This is evident after watching both the Tottenham and Wigan games this past week.
Van Persie’s long absence proved costly this season. If he were to have played more games and had been fully fit, Arsenal could have lifted the Premiership title this year. This however can not be used as an excuse by the Arsenal manager and fans alike.
I don’t believe the tactics are right either for the team. The 4-5-1 formation is a defensive one and is not suited for a team that plays attacking football. people will argue that it is a 4-3-3 formation, I beg to differ. It is clear to see that when Arsenal attack, there is only one body in the box and that is the lone striker up front. Arsenal have been most successful when they used to employ the 4-4-2 formation. Facts show that with this formation, Arsene Wenger’s team have won numerous trophies. So I would ditch the 4-5-1 system and go back to the reliable 4-4-2 shape next season.
So what have Arsenal got to do in order to win the premiership title next year?…it’s simple…buy world class players.
Arsene Wenger has already required Marouane Chamakh on a free from French club Bordeaux. The club will need to buy players, and acquire a squad big enough to withstand any challenge that comes their way.
It is now time for Mr. Wenger to reach in to his pocket and pull out the cheque book this summer, after yet another promising season ends in disappointment.
