da gbg bet: West Bromwich Albion’s returning midfielder Darren Fletcher has singled out Romaine Sawyers for praise amongst the current Baggies side as the former skipper is back at the club to continue his coaching journey.
What’s he said?
The Baggies sit top of the Championship going into this weekend’s fixtures, behind them by two points is Leeds, who are the only side that have the potential to overtake them this afternoon.
Albion’s promotion train is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon given that they sit seven points clear of the playoff zone, and if they can keep it up into the New Year, then they should surpass a total that has been enough in four of the last five seasons.
This week, the club announced that Fletcher has returned to the Hawthorns in a coaching capacity. Speaking to BirminghamLive, the 35-year-old hailed Sawyers, he said:
“Jake Livermore has been fantastic this season but Romaine Sawyers has been a breath of fresh air. He’s a fantastic footballer.
“I played against him last year when he was playing for Brentford. He’s arguably been the best midfielder in this league this season and hopefully, he can continue that form and lead us back to the Premier League.”
Player of the Season?
Albion have been performing right across the pitch this season so it is hard to single out any specific player, but if you were forced to select one it would undoubtedly be the 28-year-old midfielder.
Had Sawyers been part of the side last season, orchestrating things in the Baggies engine room, then he may well have been the defining factor in them achieving promotion.
That squad had a lethal front three in Dwight Gayle, Jay Rodriguez and Harvey Barnes, who amassed 55 goals between them.
Meanwhile, this campaign, Sawyers averages more passes per game (69.2) and a higher passing accuracy rate (92%) than any other player that isn’t a defender in the division, per WhoScored.
It can also be argued that Albion could struggle in his absence as seen last week when they only narrowly got past Sheffield Wednesday while he served a one-match suspension.
