The most damaging result was a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool prior to the international break, in which the players were heavily criticised for their performance.
During a Telefoot broadcast, Wenger opened up about the deliberations that he went through before putting pen to paper.
“Yes I hesitated about signing a new contract for personal reasons. I have been at Arsenal for 20 years and I ask myself all the time if I should continue to run the club. And also because we struggled a lot last season.”
Is it surprising that he stayed?
In some ways yes, but in others it was a predictable outcome given that Wenger never publicly expressed a desire to call it a day.
Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since Wenger took charge of the club, and there were numerous disappointing results last season.
It would have been understandable had the Frenchman decided to step away, and judging by the start of this season, it may have been the better choice.
It is of course too early to make a prediction about Arsenal’s campaign from just three games, but the club’s transfer activity is telling.
A handful of players, including Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have opted not to sign new contracts, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain snubbed a wage increase to sign for Liverpool instead.
On top of that, Arsenal were unable to convince Thomas Lemar to leave Monaco and move to the Emirates, which raises questions over whether Wenger remains a manager that footballers want to play for.
