Journalist Jacob Tanswell has revealed that Southampton may still look to hire Jesse Marsch in the summer even though negotiations recently collapsed. What’s the latest on Jesse Marsch to Saints?Nathan Jones was sacked earlier this month and the Saints are yet to hire anyone as a permanent replacement with Ruben Selles in charge for now.Similarly, Marsch was also recently fired amid some poor Premier League form with Leeds United and he was very close to taking over on the south coast but no move ever materialised.Despite that possible appointment now seemingly off the table for the time being, it sounds as though the Southampton board could rekindle their interest in Marsch in the future.Indeed, while speaking on Total Saints, Tanswell said: “He liked the project at Southampton, but something didn’t appeal to him. And he didn’t think that he could keep Southampton up, plus it was only gonna be a six-month initial [contract]. So, you know, there wasn’t many upsides for him. There wasn’t really great backing.”But I think it’s something that could be revisited in the summer or later down the line. But I think for both parties it was quite raw. The Leeds’ sacking was only nine days afterwards. It just came at the wrong time, really.”Southampton, obviously pushed for Jesse Marsch, had a huge dossier on and they really liked him. But they really like Ruben Selles. And it was very tight between those two at the start of the week.”So I think although they wanted Jesse Marsch, it wasn’t the end of the world that they had to take Ruben to manage the Chelsea game.”Would Southampton return for Marsch?Seeing as Selles seems keen on taking over for the rest of the campaign, having just led his side to a 1-0 away win against Chelsea, the board may just give it to the interim for the time being. However, in the summer, if the club get relegated, or even if they stay up, they may want to give it to someone with more experience. After all, Selles hasn’t managed a senior team before on a permanent basis. With that in mind, Marsch could be an interesting candidate to come back to. The board obviously like him, or else they wouldn’t have approached him in the first place. It seems as though one of the key reasons the American didn’t join was because talks broke down over the proposed length of contract. Perhaps in the summer, with their future not quite so up in the air, Southampton would be able to offer him better terms. With that in mind, regardless of what happens this season, it might not be wise to rule out Marsch taking charge of the Saints one day.
