da pinup bet: The Athletic journalist Sam Lee has stated that Phil Foden is a “victim of his own success” after a mediocre night from the youngster against Southampton.
What did he say?
Foden started for Manchester City for only the third time this season in the 3-1 win over the Saints, although his performance was far from his best. The academy graduate made just one key pass and lost possession 16 times in midweek, which is not something he often does.
On the other hand, what will make Pep Guardiola and Manchester City fans happy is the fact that fellow youth product Tommy Doyle stole the show instead. However, more will be expected from Foden in the future.
Lee wrote for The Athletic: “In that sense he is a victim of his own success; so much is expected of him already that when he doesn’t carve open the defence four or five times there is a tinge of disappointment.
“Alas, he is 19 years old, and while he did not have one of his showstopper nights, he certainly looked at home.”
Foden earned these great expectations
Despite still being a teenager, Foden has already won five major trophies with City and has therefore brought great expectation to himself each time he touches the ball. His excellent performances since making his first-team appearance at 17 have meant that City fans expect brilliance and defence-splitting passes every game.
Against Atalanta, Foden put in a memorable display, registering an assist and creating four big chances. This was just after he scored coming on against Dinamo Zagreb.
However, as he is still just 19 years old, there are going to be occasions when he doesn’t step up. This is especially important to remember when you consider he is more often than not partnered with genius’ like Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.
That Foden has set these high expectations himself goes to show how promising his future is when we are shocked by a mediocre display.
